SEASONAL SKIN CARE: HOW TO TRANSITION YOUR SKINCARE FROM SUMMER TO AUTUMN

SEASONAL SKIN CARE: HOW TO TRANSITION YOUR SKINCARE FROM SUMMER TO AUTUMN

As we shift from shorts to sweaters, we need to face how our skin also adjusts to seasonal change. To preserve and protect a glowing complexion in colder months, it’s extremely important to switch up the products of your skincare routine. And it’s not just about the drop in temperature, humidity levels play a huge role in the balance and overall health of our skin.

The most important aspect of winter skincare is to make sure you are adding both hydration and moisture to your routine. And before we get into it, let's clear up the main difference between these two. While hydrators secure water to the skin, moisturizers create a protective barrier that holds in hydration and hinders water loss. So hydration and moisturizers not only act together but completely depend on each other to perform and show better results.

Dry air is one of the main culprits of flaky winter skin. Heaters, cold wind, and hot showers can quickly dehydrate and irritate the skin. And when your skin gets dried out, its protective barrier starts to fall through and give room to dry, itchy skin with more pronounced wrinkles. So, during colder months, you will need to rehydrate your skin with ingredients that help hold on to water molecules and replenish them with products rich in oils and ceramides. Also known as hydrators and moisturizers.

When choosing the products that better serve your completion during this time of the year, don’t forget to take into consideration your skin’s pH level. The change of seasons tends to cause your skin’s pH to mess up and increase its acidity levels. When your pH balance is too alkaline, your skin will appear tight and dry. The exact opposite of how we want our skin to feel in the cold weather.

Especially during the winter months, Hyaluronic Acid Serums and Glycerin are prime examples of good hydration products. They work great by binding the water to the top layers of the skin to plump the look of wrinkles. Concerning moisturizers, aim for lotions, creams, face oils that are rich in ceramides and fatty acids, to lock in hydration and enhance the skin's protective barrier. Our Active Antioxidant Vitamin C Serum is ideal for maintaining proper moisture balance during the whole season.

Regarding your skin’s PH the best thing you can do is switch your cleanser to a cleansing milk, like the Ultra Purifying Milk Cleanser; and switch your soap for a shower gel. Soaps not only pull out the skin oils resulting in dehydration, but they also increase the skin’s pH, impairing its binding process. You can also use a toner after you rinse your skin with water in the morning, as it will immediately lower your skin pH. Our Moisturizing Balance Toner effectively removes impurities but doesn't let your skin dry up in the process.

Finally - even if it may seem too cold to do it - wetting your skin before applying any product will enable better retention of the cream-active ingredients. So don’t skip this step in your seasonal skincare routine.
